Why does my bow have more than one elastic band on the back?

The bands are used in two different ways. You chose which is best for you.

Some customers choose to use one band, while saving the other band(s) for later use.

This second option is my preference: I wrap all the bands around the top-knot as if the multiple bands were actually just one band. This makes the top-knot tighter, and holds the bow in better. The bow is actually easier to remove using this method.

Should I put a single elastic in my furbaby's hair prior to the bow?

The answer is YES! No matter if your bow is made with elastics or a barrette, it is best to put the hair up in a single elastic first. Why? Read below:

Bow made with elastics:
Doing this one simple step will save stress on your new bow in your furbaby’s hair. It will also help hold the bow in, and make it easier to remove the bow later. After putting in the single elastic, wrap the elastics which are on the back of the bow around the top-knot between the single elastic and the scalp. You should only need to wrap the bands (on back of bow) 2, 3 times max. Over stretching the bands can cause them to break! Use the single elastic to get the top-knot tight, not the bands on your bow!

Bow made with a barrette:
Doing this one simple step will help hold the bow in. 1st Put your pet’s top-knot up with the single elastic first. 2nd, slide the barrette into the hair, through the front of the top-knot (not around all the hair unless it is easy to do so). You want to slide it through the hair between your single elastic and the scalp. This keeps the barrette from sliding out of the hair, and is especially useful on finer, or thin coats.

Is your pet dragging his/her head on the floor or furniture?

If yes, you may have the top-knot pulled too tight. Try to loosen any hairs that seem to be pulling on the eyes. If you are sure the top-knot isn’t too tight, and your pet is still dragging her head, it might be time for a little top-knot training. I offer my advice on this subject free of charge to existing customers.

Do I cut the bands on the bow during removal?

If you’re redoing the top-knot everyday, the answer is absolutely NOT! This will destroy your bow! If the hair gets too matted around the elastics you may have no choice. It is better to cut the elastics than hurt your furbaby while trying to remove a bow.

To remove the bow I use a pair of blunt tipped baby scissors to lift the elastics, which are attached to the bow, away from the top-knot. This makes it easy to grasp the bands, untwist and remove the bow, saving all the bands for later use. Once I have the bow out, I use the same scissors to carefully cut the single elastic band out. You could do either step first, but removing the bow 1st will insure you don’t accidentally cut the bands on the bow.

Bows made with Barrettes:

If you haven’t done so already please read my info page about the use of barrettes. Click Here

Please be aware that barrettes can break!

  • The 40mm barrettes, which are used on 5/8″ Double Loop, all 7/8″ Bows, are pretty sturdy barrettes, but can still break.
  • The smaller, 30mm barrettes which are attached to 5/8 single loop bows are fragile! I do not like them, but they are the only option for the smaller bows.

Please be careful not to force the barrette to hold too much hair. See my instructions above about using a single elastic band prior to putting in your bow.

Also, when squeezing the tiny bars to release the barrette, be sure not to squeeze too hard! These are tiny, delicate barrettes and are not made to require a lot of pressure to release. All barrettes are thoroughly test by me prior to and after attaching them to the bow.

If a barrette breaks, you may return the bow to have the barrette replaced. There is a fee for this service. $3 per bow + shipping of $8 (US only, Priority Mail) Most bows will also be cleaned & re-stiffened.
